I recently returned from my holiday travel ritual of planes, trains and automobiles… Flight from Denver to NYC, cab to train station, train to Connecticut, arrival at the family home, priceless!

Greeted by my parent’s big lug for a yellow lab, Denver, I settle in for a few days of peace and quiet. Christmas eve at mom & dad’s house complete with a visit from my brother, Brad and his family… quite the entertaining scene watching my 2-year old nephew remove the dog toys from the toy box, one by one to give to Denver. Then return each and every toy to Denver’s toy box when he was told it was time to clean up. The day was a hit with ball tossing, dog chasing, gift opening, and lots of good eats.

After a couple of days of quality family time in CT and visits with childhood friends, it was time to head back to the city for part II visit with my brother, sister-in-law and nephew. Brad & I trekked across town to Soho to visit pet boutiques and check out the NYC doggie scene. I was amazed at the number of dog shops, pet stores, groomers, etc. Definitely a dog friendly city!

I was curious to learn more about dog friendly cities across the U.S. in order to put together a strategic plan for treat sample disbursement. Much to my surprise, Denver (or any other city in CO) was not mentioned on the list of the top ten dog friendly cities. Here’s the list…

1. Portland, OR
2. Chicago
3. San Diego
4. Seattle
5. Philadelphia
6. Minneapolis
7. Austin
8. Alexandria/Washington D.C.
9. New York
10. Indianapolis

Hope you and your four legged friend are lucky enough to live in a dog-friendly location. If you do have a favorite pet store in your neighborhood and would like us to send them treat samples, please let us know. We rely on our customers to help us grow and thank you for spreading the TDT word!

Wishing you & your furry ones a very happy new year!

Most likely, your dog didn’t get the memo. The memo reminding us to turn back time by one hour and reset our clocks. Dog are creatures of habit, and since they don’t read clocks they read you to determine the pattern of their day. They also live by their own internal time clocks. The “extra hour” means nothing to your dog, as he/she remains on track with regularly scheduled bathroom outings and feeding times.

As most of you know, dogs rely on their human companions for daily routines. They are dependent on our own personal behaviors to determine their schedule. For example, when I pull out the dresser drawer that houses my workout clothes, or make my way to the coat closet where the running shoes live, Tatum reacts with a fiercely wagging tail. She follows my lead when I grab my car keys to go for a ride, and wiggles around in circles when I open the food bin. Our actions guide our dogs.

We can help our dogs adjust to the time change by manipulating our actions, and ultimately shifting his/her patterns. Use the power of your personal behavior to make it a slow & smooth transition. Move feeding times, walks and bathroom outings in increments of 15 minutes for the first week of the time change. This will help Fido to adjust properly and avoid a major shock to the system. Try a mid-morning snack (Trail Dog Treats work great for this!) or an afternoon nap. When Tatum started prancing around the house, whining for dinner (now an hour early) I got out the tennis ball. I kept busy for a bit so she wouldn’t fall asleep in her bowl waiting for dinner, and compromised feeding time by ½ hour to help her to adjust.

Whatever you decide to do to help Fido with the Fall-back, have fun and enjoy the season!

1,600 - This the number of treats I’ve been cranking out of my kitchen on a weekly basis, on my own (not taking into account the assistance of my four legged friend). This number will no longer suffice. Demand for our treats is increasing at a rapid rate, while supply remains the same. Realizing that we can’t grow the business without bumping up our stock, we’ve decided to take TDT to the next level and begin producing in mass quantity!

Passing off the baking piece of the business was not an easy decision, as we take so much pride in each treat sold. When Tatum & I started the business, we spent many hours of experimenting, taste testing and unfortunately, trashing product that did not pass our quality test. Six months later, after pouring our blood (the occasional cut from knives and food processor blades), sweat (oven cranked in the extreme heat of the summer), and tears (moments of pure exhaustion from lack of sleep), we did it! We came up with four tasty & nutritious flavors of Trail Dog Treats.

We’re overwhelmed with excitement as we start a new TDT chapter! Not to mention a huge sense of relief knowing that we can sleep again. No more all night baking sessions, oven going at all hours… no more worrying about finding the time to bake enough treats for our weekly farmer’s markets, retailers, events & festivals. Not to mention keeping enough stock on hand to fulfill on-line orders and sample kits.

We were fortunate to find Tara with Stir Crazy Creations to help us move forward. I was referred to Tara by my packaging supplier, and soon after the introduction we began to plan our first baking session at her commercial bakery in Loveland. It was all so surreal, seeing the large oven that would bake my treats in half the time, knowing that this huge kitchen facility would soon replace my tiny workspace at home. Gone are the days of baking 2 racks at a time!

I met Tara at the bakery to begin rolling out our first batch. After taking inventory of ingredients, production began! It was 6:00pm and everything was running in full force… food processors shredding carrots, jars of molasses emptied by the minute, large mixers filled with dough, and me, in awe of the mass operation. The hours ticked by as we experimented with new treat shapes and tested bake times for each flavor. With the help of very strong coffee to maintain our momentum, we worked til the wee hours of the morning… we inspected every treat to ensure 100% Trail Dog Treats quality. 3:00am rolled around and my eyes were burning as we pulled out the last rack from the oven. Goal accomplished. First batch done. I left the bakery feeling like a kid on Christmas day, car packed with fresh baked treats… 2,500 treats to be exact!

The only thing missing… my “helper”……….

Tatum had to sit this one out, but she’ll be happy to know that we’ll now have time for product development. Our tree house kitchen will remain as the test lab for all future treat flavors, with lots of taste testing to be done!

A successful first run with Stir Crazy Creations. Next order will produce 6,000. You know what that means? Time to get out and sell!

Better look around the house to see if we’re dog sitting… whew! Just me. No sign of house guests. Don’t have to fight for attention or share my toys. I wonder what day it is? Will we go for a run with our friend, Sharon this morning? I hope mom doesn’t have to go to work. Maybe it’s a weekend and we’re driving to the mountains for a long hike. Oh, I’d love to swim in the reservoir. I’ll just lay here ‘til I hear the alarm go off again.

It’s time! I love waking up mom… here’s my stuffed animal monkey, aren’t I cute when I carry around stuffed animals in my mouth? Outside… outside… can’t wait any longer. Run in circles around mom to the front door… wake up, pay attention. Open, Open! BAM! I’m out… I smell squirrels, I hear birds, oh, is that the neighbor walking by with that annoying little brown mutt? Bark. Bark. Check the yard for intruders… I’m hungry! Breakfast. Can’t wait… run full speed up stairs… the faster I run circles around mom while she’s preparing my food, the faster she’ll get the bowl down. I’m getting dizzy. But oh so hungry! Gulp (30 seconds later) tasty. Can’t wait to get outside again. Door’s open… here I come! Hello world! I’m awake. Smells good out here…. Sniff Sniff. Oh, squirrel… I know I can climb this tree to get him. OUCH, branches in my way. Plow through the woods. So close. Prickles from the rose bush. What’s a little scratch? Okay, yard looks safe.

Where’s the leash? Leash? Where’s my mom? Oh, she’s going for the baseball hat… a good sign. Picking up running shoes. Yippie! I don’t see Sharon yet, so this must be a walking morning. That’s okay. Walks are good too. Where’s the leash? Walk towards the door, mom. Get the leash! No, not the harness… wiggle, wiggle. If I squirm she can’t clip on the harness, but then no walk. Fine. Let’s go. Nothing worse than being held back by a harness. I’ll pull hard to let her know how much I don’t appreciate being on a leash. Open the gate. Open it! ———————-

YES. Out the door! We’re walking. We’re walking — fast. Squirrel in that tree? Sniff sniff… pull. Pee break. Another pee break. This is my territory… pee, pee, pee. ALERT! Cat sitting on a porch 1 block away. Quick… try and catch him. Damn leash! Trees with squirrels. We’re walking, I’m leading… stop tugging me from behind, mom. Walk faster mom! Is that a butterfly? Jump, chomp. No luck. Walking… starting to get warm. Wish I had some water… panting. Thirsty, but no time to think about that since there are SQUIRRELS!

We’re walking… I own this neighborhood! Ouch. Stop trying to get me to walk closer to you. Stupid leash. Getting thirsty. I smell home. Done. Is that it? Get this leash off me. I’ll sit and look sweet. But, get it off. All of the “Good girl Tatums” must be for me, which means I get a treat! Gate opens… run through the yard, fast perimeter check… sprint, leap, smell, dive bomb woods, done. Open the door. I’m thirsty. Open.

Water bowl here I come… Gulp. Dribble. Thanks, mom, thanks… dribble, slurp, ahhh! Where’s my treat? I hear the cookie jar. The lid is opening… so hungry for a snack. YAY! Is that a Eldora Energy Cookie? My fav! Me, me. Sit like a good girl, look at me. Aren’t I cute? Gulp. Yum! Okay, gotta get more water. Open the deck door. Open! Yes… sun. Ahhh… where’s my monkey? Need my monkey to sunbathe with me. Oh, and a bone… maybe two bones… and a Kong. Toys, check. Sun, check. Know mom’s where-a-bouts (in the shower), check. Relax.

Must be a weekday… I hear news on TV. Mom’s picking clothes from the closet. Lay on her feet and roll over… pet me, rub my belly. Don’t go to work. I wish she was opening her workout drawer instead. Darn it. I’ll follow her around ‘til she gets dressed… circle, circle, you can’t put your shoes on with my head in your way. Back to the bathroom. My favorite. The hair dryer! Take a break from the sun to lay on the bathroom floor… hot air. Awesome! Rub head on mom’s leg. Hey, don’t aim that thing at me! Ahhh… sniff sniff. Oh no, she’s getting ready to leave. She’s really leaving me, all alone. Get closer… follow, look sad, make her trip over me. I’m here. Don’t leave. (big sad eyes)… okay, I’ll lay down, but can you put on some music or something? She’s heading toward the stereo. NPR, hmmm? Not my favorite, but it’ll do. Yes, mom, I’ll sit. One last ditch effort… paw. You’ll be right back? Okay, then.

Well, I’ve got the place to myself, what should I do first? A nap sounds good. Mom’s bed sounds even better! She’ll never know…

Cling clang… pans are out. That means only one thing. Baking treats! Where are the ingredients? Yum. Where? Pant… pant… circle… get the carrots. I see the food processor. Carrots! Carrots! Yes, a carrot piece on the floor. Mine! More carrots. Applesauce… just one taste. I’ll stand under the counter. Crumbs… fall off the counter, crumbs… floor tastes good. Lick. Drop something else… wag, wag, circle… I’m here. Stop spilling flour on me. Flour on the floor… lick… hmmm? Where are the carrots? What’s next? FLY! Ahhh… chase the fly. Jump, chomp. What’s going on outside? Guard the house from the deck. Clear view from here… stare at the trees, keep a watch for squirrels.

What’s the purpose for giving treats?

To use as a training tool?
Choose a small, one bite treat that your dog really likes and can eat quickly
*Suggested treat: Tatum’s Trail Mix

To keep your puppy occupied?
Large bones are best for these situations, particularly raw hide bones. It’s best to stay away from bones that can break apart easily to avoid choking.

To reward good behavior or just to be nice?
Feeding treats is a great way to help reinforce the special bond between you and your dog and reward positive behavior. Healthy, low fat treat is best for this purpose.
*Suggested treat: Eldora Energy Cookie

How do you choose the right treat for your dog?

Consider your intended use, how often you’ll treat, your dog’s age and overall health, i.e. any known food allergies. You should think about your dog’s size, chewing habits & capabilities, as well as any the activity level of your dog. But, the most important consideration when choosing the right treat for your pooch is of course his/her taste preference!

If your dog is extremely active, involved in competitive shows and needs a lot of energy, then you probably should choose treats that have extra protein and fat that he can turn into extra energy.
*Suggested treat: Sunshine Peak Treat

What are the benefits in feeding your dog treats?

Some treats – especially crunchy treats – promote dental health. Biscuits are extremely popular due to their portability, crunch, and the fact that they help keep teeth clean by scraping off debris. Such treats can also provide dental benefits by freshening breath and reducing plaque buildup and tartar formation.
*Suggested treat: Rocky Mountain Crunch Ball

Feeding your dog low-fat, wheat free, all-vegetable based treats provides him/her with essential nutrients while offering all the flavor and appeal of a delicious snack. These types of treats are conducive to weight loss and assist in maintaining optimum health, which is a lifelong benefit!

Remember, treats should be given as they are intended and are not meant to be a staple in your dog’s diet. Your dog still needs to maintain a healthy diet and weight, to ensure he/she has a long healthy life. Treats should not be more than ten percent of your dog’s daily diet.

Bon Appetit!

There are many reasons why dogs make ideal running partners. They have a natural athleticism and a joy of running that can be inspiring runners of all levels. I’m fortunate to have a great running partner in Tatum, as her work ethic & running enthusiasm can’t be beat! She looks forward to our weekly outing with my neighborhood run club, and has successfully completed a handful of doggie running races.

A well-exercised dog is not only a happy dog, but also a healthy one. Running provides a mental and physical stimulation necessary for a dog’s well being, increasing their endorphins and helping to keep the unwanted pounds off. Dogs live for human contact, and running is a great activity to bring the two of you together. Some breed types make better running companions than others. You’ll find a large variety of breed options to choose from if you’re the type of runner who typically runs shorter distances at a slower pace (10-12 min per mile). If you run more like 5-10 miles in an outing at a faster pace (8 min per mile or faster), you’ll want dog that’s athletic, energetic, and built for speed.

Compared to people, dogs dissipate heat poorly. Breeds with long hair, or are large or overweight have a harder time dealing with hot temps compared to shorthaired, smaller, and more slender dogs. Those with flat noses, like Pugs and Bulldogs, have a more difficult time getting enough air as well as dissipating heat. Dogs that are best suited for running, and probably easiest to run with are those who are above your knee height. Shorter dogs are easier to trip over! Sporting breeds such as German Shorthaired Pointers, Vizslas, and Weimaraners make the best runners. These dogs tend to be able to go long distances and get into the zone with a steady trot. Dogs who are 30 – 60 lbs (Border Collies, Standard Poodles & herding breeds) are generally athletic enough to run well, as are America’s most popular breed — Labs!

Before hitting the trails/pavement with your dog, it’s important that he/she is in optimum health and good physical shape. They need to be trained in basic heeling skills to avoid injury and discomfort for you and your pooch. Although, this is an ongoing battle with Tatum, as she has the tendency to go full speed ahead, pulling & pushing me to challenge myself with a faster than normal pace. We’re working on that…

As far as food consumption, it’s best not to feed your dog right before or after a run, but small treats can be helpful enticements during the run. Tatum’s Trail Mix makes for the perfect “on the go” running snack!

All in all, you need to pay attention to your dog while you’re running together. If he or she seems thirsty, stop for a water break. If their paws seem sore from the pavement, slow down and let your dog run on grass or in the shade. Be mindful of your dog’s condition as well as your own, and you’ll both have a positive outing!

A Horse is a Horse of course. But a dog who eats like a horse… that’s my dog!

I realized Tatum’s love of carrots when I first began testing recipes for the Red Rocks Scone Bone. While cutting carrots down in size for food processing, pieces would often fall off the counter and onto the kitchen floor. By Tatum’s reaction, you would have thought a sirloin steak landed in front of her… she’d gobble these carrot pieces up in record time, getting back in her “ready position” for the next falling orange gem to land.

This little scenario became routine for us, whether we were baking treats or cutting up fruits and vegetables for human consumption. After the discovery of carrots, Tatum was thrilled to find the same satisfaction in apples, zucchini, cucumbers and bananas. The apples are a big hit on the trails. They’re easy to pack, and a great thirst quencher too!

Research shows that a dog is classified as a carnivore, but is an omnivore in practice. Therefore, vegetables are safe for dogs to eat (in moderation). Many dog foods on the market include carrots as one of their ingredients, using this particular vegetable as a filler and vitamin supplement. Trail Dog Treats are no different, as carrots and apples are a staple ingredient in our kitchen. Other than the obvious benefit; a delicious crunchy snack that your dog will love, carrots can be good for plaque removal on your dog’s teeth.

So, go ahead and feed your dog like a horse, with nutritious fruit & vegetable snacks… raw or cooked!
